So you really wanna know more about me? Scary!
Well I’m a (mostly) friendly, scruffy old lion living in Preston in the NorthWest of England… and I’m a fur (but you had probably already guessed that).
I won’t bore you with the day-job stuff because its, well, boring!
I’ve always been interested in wildlife, nature and conservation. I’ve had a particular interest in the great cats for as long as I can remember and have whole shelves of books about them that I’ve collected over the years. In the process of growing up – going to college, getting a job, buying a house etc. I’d kind of forgotten my interest in big cats. Then the combination of a major holiday and a certain Disney film brought it all back to the fore. I knew I wanted to get a good camera to be able to take quality photos and I knew what those photos should be of – big cats.
I spent many a happy day at zoos up and down the country taking pictures and chatting to staff. In the process I first came across the story of the Asiatic lion. (Did you even know there were lions in India?) Having got so much pleasure from seeing those animals and had so much support from zoo staff I decided I wanted to give something back. At that time there was no support programme for India’s last lions – no charity to give to. Plus that would have been the easy thing to do – just donate a bit of cash. I wanted to do something more and the answer seemed obvious: At that time there was absolutely nothing on the Web about India’s lions (and very little about lions in general). I could combine my ‘day job’ of Web development with my passion for wild cats and so the Asiatic Lion Information Centre was born. The site has been running for years now and still generates a regular stream of enquiries ranging from kids doing school projects through to film and tv companies researching documentaries.
Through my work with the lion website I’ve made friends throughout the cat conservation community and was asked to get involved with 21st Century Tiger and later the Amur Leopard Conservation Support Programme. These are all good causes worthy of your support. It doesn’t have to be money – half of the battle in preserving any endangered species is just getting the word out so that more people know about the problem.
Please do visit the websites: I hope you enjoy them and would love to hear from you with any comments or questions.
